Synology Series – 3-2-1 Backup

I have always been a believer in backup, but how much backup is enough, how many copies of ones data should one have? Looks like after reading numerous articles. Its 3.
But how does one simply create 3 copies of their Office 365 / GSuite / File Servers etc. with seamless integration and replication.

I found the following link

Let us assume, you already have the packages installed, Active Backup for Business, Office 365, and GSuite, all running, backing up the respective locations.

We have a choice here, we can backup the entire NAS. Just like this, pops everything into a backup file and sends it over to another NAS

Create a backup task in Hyper Backup

Select the Apps you want to backup.

Select the rotation

Select the schedule, notification settings, and compress to your preference.

Select the destination NAS, which has Hyper Backup installed as well.

As simple as that,

Now, if we wanted to get a little more granular, what if we wanted to use the actual data inside a Active Backup for Office 365, use the portal and see the mail messages, calendar, Sharepoint files etc…. On the 2nd NAS.

We can use a different type of backup, we can use the snapshot replication, where we can replicate certain folders.

Step 1
Configure the snapshot feature on the NAS that has the existing back-ups running. You would install Hyper Backup and its supporting services.

Step 2
Configure the other NAS, in this case, my older DS920, to receive the snapshots.

Step 3
Configure the Active Backup for Office 365 (in this example) to use the replicated folder. And just like that, you have full access to all your Office 365 data on two different local NAS’s. In this scenario, you could build a VPN, you could have these NAS’s in different physical locations, which I guess is the point essentially.

That’s it? It is actually that easy!! Synology have made it that easy to take their existing backup packages and replicate them to another NAS, or a Cloud service for that matter.
